South African consumers could soon have greater control over unsolicited marketing calls and messages as the government prepares to outline details of the National Opt-Out Registry.
Trade, Industry and Competition Minister Parks Tau will unpack the new system during a media briefing in Pretoria on Wednesday.
The registry is designed to give consumers the ability to block direct marketing communications before they are contacted.
Businesses involved in direct marketing will also face stricter obligations, with marketers required to check and cleanse their databases every month before launching campaigns.
Tau will be joined at the briefing by National Consumer Commissioner Hardin Ratshisusu and Information Regulator chairperson Advocate Pansy Tlakula.
The initiative is expected to clarify how consumers can register their preferences and how businesses will be required to comply with the new system.
