Suspended Deputy National Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Shadrack Sibiya is set to return to the Randburg Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday as his bail application continues.
Sibiya was remanded in custody after being arrested on allegations including rape, human trafficking, sexual grooming of a 16-year-old girl and a firearm-related offence.
The State is opposing his release on bail, citing concerns that he could interfere with witnesses if released.
His bail proceedings were previously postponed after the court heard arguments relating to audio recordings that form part of the State’s case. The recordings are expected to feature prominently as prosecutors continue presenting their opposition to bail.
Sibiya’s defence is expected to challenge the State’s allegations and argue why he should be released pending the finalisation of the criminal case.
The suspended police chief has denied the allegations against him.
The bail application comes amid a separate SAPS disciplinary process against Sibiya, who was suspended from his position as deputy national commissioner.
