A police forensic report has reportedly recommended that former Police Minister Bheki Cele be prosecuted over allegations that he received gratification from businessman Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala.
The 370-page report allegedly links cash withdrawals from companies associated with Matlala to meetings involving Cele. It also reportedly raises questions about luxury accommodation allegedly provided to the former minister at a Pretoria penthouse.
The investigation was conducted by the SAPS Internal Audit and Risk and Integrity Management divisions, which reportedly found grounds to recommend criminal charges.
Matlala previously told a parliamentary inquiry that he paid Cele R300,000 and R200,000 in separate transactions, claiming he was seeking the minister’s assistance following the cancellation of his SAPS contract.
Cele has denied receiving money from Matlala and has challenged investigators to provide evidence proving that he received the alleged payments. He has also defended his stay at the penthouse.
