Shadrack Sibiya bail application continues in Randburg

Suspended Deputy National Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Shadrack Sibiya’s bail application is continuing at the Randburg Magistrates’ Court in Johannesburg on Friday.

Sibiya is facing charges including rape, human trafficking and the alleged sexual grooming of a 16-year-old girl. A further firearm-related charge has also been added to the case.

The State is opposing bail, with investigating officer Sergeant Nokukhanya Ndlovu telling the court that there are concerns Sibiya could interfere with witnesses or harm complainants if released.

On Thursday, the court heard evidence about WhatsApp communications between Sibiya and the 16-year-old complainant.

Ndlovu testified that Sibiya allegedly had a 51-minute WhatsApp call with the girl, during which he allegedly asked her about her sexual activity and requested explicit videos. The State also alleges that he instructed her to keep their communications secret.

The court further heard a recording involving Bishop Azwihangwi Maumela, a person known to Sibiya, who allegedly discussed locating and speaking to one of the complainants.

The State has cited the alleged interaction as part of its concerns about possible witness interference.

The defence disputes the State’s allegations as it argues for Sibiya to be released on bail.

The bail proceedings are continuing, with the court expected to hear further evidence and arguments from both the State and the defence.
