Registered voters who will be unable to cast their ballots at their voting stations on Election Day can apply for special votes ahead of South Africa’s Local Government Elections.
Applications opened earlier this month and will close on 12 October 2026 at 5pm, Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni said during a media briefing in Pretoria on Tuesday.
Special votes are available to eligible voters with disabilities, pregnant women, elderly people and those who have work-related commitments that prevent them from voting on 4 November.
“Applications for special votes for the 2026 Local Government Elections are open and will close on 12 October 2026 at 5pm,” Ntshavheni said.
Cabinet has also urged voters whose identity documents have been lost or damaged to apply for replacements as soon as possible.
Applications can be made at Home Affairs offices or at more than 450 participating bank branches.
The Electoral Commission (IEC) has confirmed that 136,790 candidates qualified to contest the elections across the country’s eight metropolitan municipalities, 44 district municipalities and 205 local municipalities.
President Cyril Ramaphosa has proclaimed 4 November 2026 as the date for the local government elections.
