Mpumalanga taxi boss Joe Sibanyoni is returning to the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry today for continued cross-examination over allegations of extortion linked to the mining sector.
Sibanyoni appeared before the commission at the Bridgette Mabandla Justice College in Pretoria on Tuesday, where evidence leader Matthew Chaskalson questioned him about allegations made by businessman Tengane Ntuli.
Ntuli alleges that Sibanyoni and Oupa Bafana Sindane forced him to pay protection fees to secure a mining contract.
He claimed Sibanyoni initially demanded R100,000 in cash and later required 40% of his contract income, with about R2.29 million ultimately paid into the account linked to the arrangement.
WhatsApp messages presented to the commission included a message from Sindane demanding payment and warning that the operation could be stopped if the outstanding amount was not explained within 48 hours.
Chaskalson told the commission that the affidavits and WhatsApp exchanges pointed to an alleged extortion racket involving threats of violence.
Sibanyoni denied wrongdoing, saying his involvement was part of a legitimate business arrangement to help Ntuli meet local-content requirements. He said he invested R900,000 into the partnership.
