Sharp fuel price increases expected in September

South African motorists could be hit with another sharp increase in fuel prices in September, with petrol, diesel and illuminating paraffin all showing significant potential hikes.

Current projections indicate that diesel could increase by between R2.73 and R2.90 per litre, while petrol is showing a potential increase of between 66 and 77 cents per litre. The petrol increase could climb to between 80 and 90 cents per litre by the end of August, depending on international oil prices and the rand-dollar exchange rate.

Illuminating paraffin is also expected to take a major hit, with a projected increase of around R2.14 per litre.

The anticipated increases come after months of volatility in global fuel markets, with South African fuel prices remaining considerably higher than they were in March.

Although Brent crude has fallen from its 2026 peak of about R2,049 per barrel to approximately R1,464 per barrel, it remains well above the pre-war level of around R1,139 per barrel.
