A newborn baby has been rescued from the bottom of a pit toilet at a school in Bizana, Eastern Cape, after a learner reportedly gave birth inside the school’s ablution facilities.
The baby was heard crying from inside the pit, prompting teachers to intervene and carry out a difficult rescue operation.
The Eastern Cape Department of Education has confirmed the incident, saying both the learner and the newborn have been admitted to hospital.
Department spokesperson Malibongwe Mtima said the swift intervention by educators helped save the baby’s life.
He said the department was grateful to the teachers who went beyond their duties to assist the learner and ensure the baby received help.
Medical reports indicate that the baby is in a healthy condition, while the learner is also receiving medical care.
