A 32-year-old man from Mhlanganweni Locality in Libode has been sentenced to 20 years’ imprisonment for raping a 49-year-old woman in her home and fell asleep next to her.
Sandile Sininda was sentenced by the Mthatha Regional Court last week after appearing before the court since 2024 in connection with the rape.
The court heard that the victim was asleep when she was disturbed by noise coming from the kitchen. When she went to investigate, Sininda allegedly grabbed and threatened her before raping her on the veranda.
He then took the victim to her bedroom, where he raped her for a second time.
After the attack, Sininda fell asleep inside the house. The victim used the opportunity to escape and alert her neighbours, who assisted her.
Sininda was arrested on 2 December 2024 and remained in custody throughout the court proceedings after being denied bail. He was ultimately convicted and sentenced to 20 years in prison.
The court also declared Sininda unfit to possess a firearm.
The sentence brings an end to a case that had been before the courts since 2024.
