A 26-year-old man who used Facebook and Instagram to lure young women with fake modelling and photoshoot opportunities has been sentenced to four life terms by the Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg.
Victor Mokoena targeted women between 2021 and 2024, posing as a photographer or promoter before taking victims to secluded locations where he raped and assaulted them.
He was convicted of four counts of rape, attempted murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances, assault and pointing an object resembling a firearm.
He was also sentenced to 15 years for robbery, two years for assault and one year for pointing the object, with these sentences running concurrently with the life terms.
The NPA welcomed the sentence and urged social media users to verify identities and exercise caution before meeting people they encounter online.
