Cachalia leads high-level meeting to tackle illegal initiation schools

Acting Minister of Police Firoz Cachalia has convened a high-level meeting with senior South African Police Service (SAPS) officials, premiers and MECs to strengthen government’s response to illegal initiation schools and initiation-related deaths.

The meeting followed a recent engagement led by Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Minister Velenkosini Hlabisa on addressing illegal initiation schools while protecting legitimate cultural practices.

Deputy National Commissioner Lieutenant General Tebello Mosikili presented a report on initiation-related deaths, arrests, and the number of legal and illegal initiation schools across the country.

SAPS said the meeting highlighted the need for stronger coordination between government, law enforcement and traditional leaders. Cachalia resolved that the concerns raised would form part of a report to CoGTA, with recommendations to improve coordination and intensify action against illegal initiation schools to prevent further deaths.
