Free State crime crackdown nets drugs, alcohol and suspected stolen copper

Various law enforcement agencies seized drugs, thousands of litres of alcohol and suspected stolen copper cables during a large-scale crime prevention operation across the Free State.

The integrated operation involved the South African Police Service (SAPS), the Departments of Home Affairs, Labour, Economic Small Business Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs, Community Safety, Roads and Transport, the South African Revenue Service (SARS), and Mangaung Metro Municipality Law Enforcement.

Police conducted 1,015 high-visibility patrols, 541 vehicle checkpoints and 21 roadblocks across the province.

As part of the operation, authorities carried out 1,044 inspections at licensed liquor outlets, inspected 50 scrapyards, visited 559 spaza shops to check labour law compliance, and conducted 2,868 farm visits with officials from Home Affairs and the Department of Labour.

During the crackdown, officers confiscated 15,650 litres of alcohol, 520 packets of tobacco, and 32.106kg of suspected stolen copper cables. They also seized 122 Mandrax tablets, 224g of tik, and 9.397kg of dagga as part of ongoing efforts to combat crime in the province.
