Suspended KZN correctional services boss faces internal disciplinary action

The Department of Correctional Services has confirmed that it will continue with internal disciplinary proceedings against suspended KwaZulu-Natal Commissioner Mnikelwa Nxele, despite his case now being before the courts.

Nxele appeared in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrates’ Court after being arrested by the Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC) on charges of fraud and money laundering.

According to investigators, the charges stem from allegations that Nxele received monthly bribes of about R100 000 from State Capture-linked facilities management company Bosasa while serving as Chairperson of the Special Bid Adjudication Committee in KwaZulu-Natal.

His arrest follows investigations based on evidence provided by former Bosasa executive Angelo Agrizzi during the State Capture Commission. The probe relates to Bosasa contracts valued at approximately R20 million.

In a statement, the Department said Nxele remains suspended and that disciplinary processes will continue in line with departmental policies and legislation.

“The matter is now before the courts, and the Department will allow the legal process to unfold without prejudice,” it said.

Nxele was granted R50 000 bail, and the case was postponed to 16 September 2026 for further proceedings.
