SAPS busts R3.7 million illicit cigarette smuggling operation in Sedibeng, two arrested

Police in the Sedibeng District have intercepted a truck transporting illicit cigarettes worth an estimated R3.7 million and arrested two suspects during an intelligence-driven operation.

The operation, conducted on Wednesday, 20 May 2026, followed information received by Crime Intelligence members about a white UD truck allegedly transporting illicit cigarettes from Gauteng to QwaQwa via the R59 route through Vereeniging and Sasolburg.

According to police, officers tracked the truck after it passed through Vereeniging towards Sasolburg. Members attached to Sasolburg Infrastructure were alerted and later spotted the vehicle at the four-way stop on the R82 and R57.

The truck was stopped and escorted to Zamdela SAPS for further investigation and a detailed search.

During the search, police recovered hundreds of boxes of suspected illicit cigarettes, including Remington Gold and Chelsea brands. The haul is estimated to have a street value of about R3.7 million.

Two suspects, aged 60 and 43, were arrested at the scene.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects were allegedly transporting the illicit cigarettes on behalf of an individual from Springs.

The suspects are expected to face charges related to the possession and transportation of illicit cigarettes.
