Mkhwanazi precious stones case postponed to 18 September

The precious stones theft case against suspended EMPD Deputy Chief Julius Mkhwanazi and three co-accused has been postponed to 18 September 2026 for the disclosure of the police docket.

Mkhwanazi appeared in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday alongside Witness K, Adrian Norman Mackenzie and Keisha Leigh Stols. The four are accused of involvement in the alleged theft of precious stones worth more than R14 million during an alleged police operation in Killarney, Johannesburg, in 2023.

The accused will remain in custody until their next court appearance.

Mkhwanazi is alleged to have been the mastermind behind the operation, in which officials allegedly posed as police officers to gain access to the property where the precious stones were kept.

The case is now expected to return to court on 18 September, when the State is expected to provide the defence with the docket as the matter moves forward.
