Mbeki and Zuma set to testify before Khampepe Commission

Former presidents Thabo Mbeki and Jacob Zuma are expected to appear before the Judicial Commission of Inquiry into allegations surrounding the handling of apartheid-era Truth and Reconciliation Commission cases later this month.

Mbeki is expected to testify on 19 October, while Zuma is scheduled to appear on 21 October.

The commission, chaired by retired Constitutional Court Justice Sisi Khampepe, was established by President Cyril Ramaphosa in 2025 to investigate allegations that efforts were made to prevent the investigation or prosecution of apartheid-era crimes that had been referred for possible prosecution following the original Truth and Reconciliation Commission process.

The inquiry is examining whether there was political interference or suppression of prosecutions involving unresolved apartheid-era cases.

Mbeki and Zuma became directly involved in the commission after challenging Khampepe’s participation and seeking her recusal.

The former presidents raised concerns about Khampepe’s previous involvement in the TRC, where she served as a commissioner and member of its Amnesty Committee. They also pointed to her subsequent role as Deputy National Director of Public Prosecutions.

Their legal challenge was dismissed by the Constitutional Court on 31 August 2026, allowing Khampepe to remain as chairperson of the inquiry.
