Police and other law enforcement agencies have arrested five men following a violent attack on a bus near Dutywa that also triggered an urgent response to protect another bus being pursued in the same area.
The incident happened on Tuesday morning, 29 September 2026, along Colosa Road near Chachazela location in Chisela A/A.
Police were called at about 07:15 after reports that a group of suspects travelling in several bakkies was allegedly pelting a privately owned bus with stones.
When officers arrived, they found the bus engulfed in flames and abandoned by its occupants.
Preliminary investigations established that the suspects allegedly robbed passengers of their personal belongings, including cash, before setting the bus alight.
The driver and another passenger sustained minor injuries, while the remaining passengers escaped unharmed.
As law enforcement officers dealt with the burning bus, they received an additional report that another bus was being chased by people travelling in bakkies nearby.
The response team managed to locate the second bus and rescue its occupants before the vehicle could be attacked or damaged.
Five men, aged between 25 and 56, were subsequently arrested after being linked to the first attack.
They are expected to appear before the Dutywa Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, 30 September 2026, facing charges of malicious damage to property, robbery with aggravating circumstances and assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm.
Acting Amathole District Commissioner Brigadier Zinikele Freddie praised the joint response by the various law enforcement agencies.
“Fighting crime is a collective responsibility,” Freddie said.
Police investigations into the incident are continuing.
