Didiza faces no-confidence motion over Ramaphosa impeachment process

National Assembly Speaker Thoko Didiza is set to face her first motion of no confidence on Wednesday, with the EFF accusing her of mishandling President Cyril Ramaphosa’s impeachment proceedings.

EFF leader Julius Malema tabled the motion in June, criticising Didiza’s decision not to oppose Ramaphosa’s court application to halt the impeachment process.

The EFF argues that Didiza failed to uphold Parliament’s constitutional responsibilities independently and impartially.

Didiza has defended her decision, saying she acted in accordance with the court’s ruling, while the impeachment committee separately opposed Ramaphosa’s application.

Deputy Speaker Annelie Lotriet ruled that the motion was largely in order, although some allegations may require evidence or must be removed.

The EFF has also accused Didiza of misleading the public about legal advice relating to her decision, claiming the opinion was obtained only after she had already made up her mind.
