A 50-year-old police captain and a 38-year-old suspect have been killed in a shootout during an operation in Knysna in the early hours of Wednesday morning.
The captain was attached to the Provincial Tactical Response Team and had been deployed to Knysna as part of investigations into the murders of former Knysna mayor and councillor Aubrey Tsengwa, as well as Mandla Matiwane and Mandla Tyololo.
Police were conducting an operation at the Sewende Laan informal settlement on Uniondale Road following information about illegal firearms when a shootout broke out.
The suspect was killed during the exchange of gunfire. Police recovered two firearms from his possession.
Psychosocial support is being provided to members of the SAPS team at the scene and the captain’s colleagues in Cape Town.
Three suspects have appeared in court in connection with Tsengwa’s murder, while investigations into the other killings continue.
Western Cape Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Sizakhele Dyantyi has expressed condolences to the family and colleagues of the slain police captain.
