Man gets life for girlfriend’s murder

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has secured a life imprisonment sentence against 27-year-old Retshidisotswe Khumisi of Khutsong for the premeditated murder of his girlfriend, Ntsoaki Annah Hobson.

Khumisi stabbed Hobson repeatedly in the neck during an argument in the early hours of 2 March 2025 before fleeing the scene. He later handed himself over to police and remained in custody after the NPA successfully opposed bail.

Khumisi pleaded not guilty, but State Prosecutor Advocate Michael Shivuri presented evidence that led to his conviction for premeditated murder.

During sentencing, the State argued that Khumisi had shown no remorse and had abused the trust placed in him as Hobson’s partner and the father of one of her children.

Judge Jacobus Johannes Strijdom found the crime extremely serious and noted its devastating impact on Hobson’s family. The court also found that there were no substantial and compelling circumstances to justify a lesser sentence.

Khumisi was therefore sentenced to life imprisonment.

The NPA welcomed the sentence, saying it sends a strong message that gender-based violence and crimes against women will not be tolerated.
