A deadly head-on collision has claimed two lives and left three people seriously injured on the R409 near Tutura, outside Butterworth, with suspected drunk and reckless driving being investigated.
The crash involved a VW Polo travelling from Butterworth towards Centane and a Suzuki Ertiga heading in the opposite direction.
The male driver of the Polo and an adult female passenger in the Suzuki were declared dead at the scene.
Three others – a passenger in the Polo, the Suzuki driver and another passenger – suffered serious injuries and were rushed to Butterworth Hospital.
Authorities are investigating allegations that driving under the influence of alcohol, reckless and negligent driving may have contributed to the crash.
Transport and Community Safety MEC Xolile Nqatha urged motorists to obey the rules of the road and drive responsibly.
Nqatha expressed his condolences to the families of the deceased and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
A case of culpable homicide has been opened at Centane Police Station, with investigations continuing.
