Parliament suspends NCC MP Fadiel Adams amid pending criminal case

The National Coloured Congress (NCC) leader and Member of Parliament Fadiel Adams has been suspended from Parliament under the Powers, Privileges and Immunities of Parliament and Provincial Legislatures Act over allegations that his conduct brought the institution into disrepute.

The suspension was disclosed on Wednesday during a meeting of Parliament’s Section 89 Impeachment Committee, where chairperson Magashule Gana informed members that Adams would not be attending because he had been suspended. His suspension is expected to remain in place until later this month.

Adams is facing three counts of fraud and two counts of defeating the administration of justice. The charges relate to allegations that he falsely represented his status and conducted unauthorised interviews with awaiting-trial inmates at Westville Prison during investigations into the 2017 murder of former ANC Youth League secretary-general Sindiso Magaqa.

The announcement came shortly before the committee voted to appoint Advocate Thandazani Madonsela SC as its evidence leader for the impeachment inquiry.
