A 38-year-old man was allegedly kidnapped after receiving a Road Accident Fund (RAF) payout, but was rescued by police before his captors could force him to withdraw more money.
The dramatic rescue took place on Monday evening, 3 August 2026, when members of the Libode Crime Prevention Unit intercepted a suspicious vehicle near the Msintsini locality during a routine crime-prevention operation.
At approximately 9:45pm, police stopped the vehicle and, as officers approached, several male occupants fled the scene in different directions. The driver, a 35-year-old man, was swiftly arrested, while a manhunt was launched for the remaining suspects.
A search of the vehicle led to the discovery of the 38-year-old victim, whose hands were tied and who had visible injuries consistent with an assault. He was immediately rescued and transported to a nearby medical facility for treatment.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the victim had recently received a Road Accident Fund (RAF) payout. Police believe he was robbed of an undisclosed amount of cash and that the suspects were on their way to force him to withdraw additional funds when they were intercepted.
The Isuzu double-cab bakkie allegedly used in the commission of the crime has been confiscated for further investigation.
The arrested suspect is expected to appear in the Libode Magistrate’s Court on charges of kidnapping and robbery. Police said additional charges could be added as investigations continue.
Meanwhile, police have launched a manhunt for the suspects who fled the scene.
