Two arrested over alleged R15 million precious stones robbery to appear in court

Two suspects are expected to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday in connection with the alleged theft of precious stones worth nearly R15 million from a Killarney home.

The case stems from an alleged fake police raid carried out in 2023, during which law enforcement officers and a businessman are accused of entering the apartment and seizing the precious stones without a valid search warrant.

One suspect was arrested on Friday, while the second handed himself over to police on Sunday.

The alleged theft surfaced during testimony before the Madlanga Commission, where Witness K claimed that suspended Deputy Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) Chief Julius Mkhwanazi masterminded the operation.

According to the testimony, Mkhwanazi allegedly orchestrated the raid because he was in desperate need of money after being suspended. The allegations remain under investigation, and the accused are expected to face charges related to the multimillion-rand heist.
