A 20-year-old suspect is expected to appear before the New Brighton Magistrate’s Court on Friday in connection with the murder of Gqeberha Ward Councillor Sicelo Mleve.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) confirmed the arrest follows the fatal shooting of the councillor at his office in Zwide on the evening of 20 June 2026.
According to police, Mleve was shot at about 18:50, prompting the immediate launch of a manhunt for two suspects believed to have been involved in the attack.
Police said members of the Eastern Cape Provincial Serious Violent Crime Investigation Unit arrested the 20-year-old suspect in Kwazakhele on Thursday, 2 July 2026.
The accused is expected to make his first court appearance on charges of murder, armed robbery and possession of firearms. Police said additional charges may still be added as the investigation continues.
The Provincial Commissioner of the Eastern Cape, Lieutenant General Vuyisile Ncata, is expected to brief the media outside the New Brighton Magistrate’s Court after the court proceedings.
