Seven in court after alleged mob assault leaves Bohlokong man dead

Seven people are expected to appear before the Bethlehem Magistrate’s Court on Friday after being arrested in connection with the alleged mob killing of a 34-year-old man in Bohlokong, Free State.

The suspects, comprising five men and two women aged between 24 and 50, were arrested on Thursday, 2 July 2026, following an intelligence-driven operation led by the Thabo Mofutsanyana District Executive Detective Service.

Police said the arrests were made with the assistance of Bethlehem Crime Intelligence, Bohlokong Crime Prevention, and the Bethlehem Public Order Policing Unit.

The suspects are facing a charge of murder linked to the death of Bikkie Mdakani (34), who allegedly died after being assaulted by a group of community members.

According to police, the incident occurred on Wednesday, 10 June 2026, at about 06:20 in Extension 8, Bohlokong. Mdakani was allegedly confronted and surrounded by community members who accused him of stealing property from a nearby house after he was allegedly found in possession of suspected stolen items.

Police said the group allegedly assaulted him before he was taken to a local hospital for medical treatment.

Mdakani later succumbed to his injuries on 12 June 2026, prompting police to open a murder case for investigation.

Investigators from the Thabo Mofutsanyana District Executive Detective Service launched an inquiry and, on Thursday, identified the suspects and their residential addresses.

The accused are expected to make their first appearance in the Bethlehem Magistrate’s Court on Friday, where they will face murder charges.
