ANC commends peaceful protests, backs stronger immigration enforcement

The African National Congress (ANC) has welcomed the largely peaceful protests held across South Africa on Tuesday, saying they demonstrated the country’s democratic maturity while acknowledging public concerns over illegal immigration.

“The ANC recognises that South Africans have legitimate concerns regarding illegal immigration and its impact on public services, employment opportunities, crime, and the rule of law,” the party said.

It also praised those who participated peacefully, saying, “The ANC commends the overwhelming majority of South Africans who exercised their democratic rights peacefully and responsibly throughout the country.”

The governing party called on the Department of Home Affairs to strengthen efforts to identify and repatriate undocumented foreign nationals in accordance with the law. It also urged the public to remain calm, stating, “No individual should be harassed, assaulted, intimidated or profiled based on suspicion or allegations regarding their immigration status.”
