Phil Odili, the husband of the Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality’s Deputy Executive Mayor, has been arrested after police allegedly found nearly 30 undocumented foreign nationals at a guesthouse in Bloemfontein.
Speaking to reporters, Free State Premier MaQueen Letsoha-Mathae said Odili is a Nigerian citizen who is legally in South Africa and has a family with the senior Mangaung politician who owns the guesthouse.
Although no formal charges had been laid against Odili at the time of the premier’s media briefing, he remained in police custody while police and immigration authorities continued their investigation.
The arrest follows a joint operation targeting illegal immigration and has drawn significant public attention due to the political links to the property.
