KwaZulu-Natal police have launched a manhunt after suspects allegedly opened fire on police officers in Cato Manor on Monday night, 24 August 2026.
Police conducting crime prevention operations spotted a silver Toyota Etios at Bonela Sports Field. A search led to the recovery of an AK-47 rifle and four fully loaded magazines, and two occupants were arrested.
While transporting the suspects to the police station, officers were followed by a white Toyota double cab and a white Toyota Corolla Cross.
The arrested suspects allegedly warned police that the occupants of the vehicles were planning to attack them and were waiting to deliver another AK-47 for a cash-in-transit robbery planned for Tuesday.
The suspects then allegedly opened fire on the police vehicle. Officers avoided returning fire because of the presence of members of the public and drove to safety at a police station.
The two arrested suspects were wounded in the shooting and are recovering in hospital under police guard.
A manhunt is underway for the attackers.
