Banyana Banyana face tough World Cup play-off route

Sasol Banyana Banyana have been drawn against Chinese Taipei, Ecuador and Uzbekistan in the preliminary phase of the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2027 Play-off Tournament.

The matches will be played between 24 November and 5 December 2026, with the venue still to be announced.

Banyana coach Dr Desiree Ellis described the draw as challenging but achievable, stressing the importance of starting strongly.

“It’s not an easy draw but it is doable provided we get off to a good start. The first game is the most important because you fail on this one and your job becomes even more harder,” said Ellis.

South Africa have previously played Uzbekistan but will face Chinese Taipei and Ecuador for the first time.

“We should focus on this phase of the competition and not think ahead of ourselves about the next stage. But we are confident that we can navigate our way to the top two,” Ellis added.

Only the top two teams will advance to the final phase in February 2027, where three teams will ultimately qualify for the World Cup in Brazil.
