SASSA is set to employ more than 1,000 contract workers across the country to help tackle long queues, assist beneficiaries and speed up grant reviews.
Social Development Minister Dina Pule announced the intervention as government moves to improve service delivery at SASSA offices, where beneficiaries have complained about overcrowding and lengthy waiting times.
The workers will assist with grant applications, beneficiary enquiries and social grant reviews. Some have already started working in Gauteng, while appointments in other provinces are expected from August.
The additional staff will also support SASSA’s intensified grant review programme, which aims to ensure that grants are paid to eligible beneficiaries and to prevent fraud and incorrect payments.
SASSA plans to review 350,000 beneficiaries this financial year, with projected savings of about R1.5 billion for the national fiscus.
Government has allocated approximately R440 million for the contract workers until the end of the financial year.
